Three museums, a trip to a tragic part of history, a very cool rooftop cafe and bar, the BMW museum and Munich beer central.
Following Munich: Around town #1. After walking along the main streets of any city and trying out different street food plus an ice cream of any sort, it’s time for some museums. So the three major museums in Munich are: the Pinakothek der Moderne, Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek. They are all located very close to each other, hence the Kunstareal, or art area, which makes everyone’s life so much easier. Especially people like us who wanted to start their days extra early and had to wait for the museums to actually open.
새로운 도시 방문할때마다 늘 들르는 곳이 미술관 혹은 박물관. 개인적으로 파리의 오르세 미술관 그리고 암스테르담의 렘브란트 미술관이 지금까지는 제일 인상적이었다. 뮌헨의 Top 3 미술관은 현대미술관, 알테 피나코테크 그리고 노이에 피나코테크. 서로 가까이 있어서 이 동네 자체가 미술 동네로 알려져 있다. 너무 일찍 나서는 바람에 미술관들이 아직 문을 열지 않아 근처 공원에서 시간을 보냈는데 나중에 보니 이 공원이 인기 있는 태닝공원이었다.
The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest galleries in the world and offers artworks from Germany, Dutch, Italy, Spain, French and more spanning from the 14th to 18th century. Some parts of the museum are closed for renovation and this will continue through 2017. The high ceilings and halls do make up for it though. Not to mention the very nice cafe that offers a quite elegant spread of brunch. I regretted the pretzel I had for breakfast as soon as I saw the basket of various pastries at the cafe. I also felt a bit misplaced with shorts and a t-shirt, huffing and puffing, searching for AC.
The Neue Pinakothek is where you can find artworks from the 18th, 19th and the early 20th century, for example the works of Francisco de Goya (Spanish romantic, inspiring Manet and Picasso), Joseph Mallord William Turner (British romantic landscapes), Pierre Auguste Renoir (the celebrator of feminine sensuality), Edgar Degas (the master of the dancers) and the one and only Vincent can Gogh (one of the famous Sunflowers series is here). The only tip here would be checking the number of the rooms. Follow the numbers. If not you might end up at the very end with the final, most famous and perhaps most impressive works. Every painting and artworks is carefully curated and placed at a certain location for a good reason, and if you don’t follow the numbers, you have to work your way up the wrong direction.
The Pinakothek der Moderne is the modern art museum and houses four different yet very interesting museums: the Sammlung Moderne Kunst (National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Arts), the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung (National Collection of Works on Paper), the Nueue Sammlung (National Museum for Design and Applied Arts) and the Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universitaet (Munich Technical University’s Museum of Architecture). All of these museums are inside one huge building and it’s considered as one of the most important areas in terms of modern art in Europe. Plus, it’s super huge so it takes a long yet inspiring time to “navigate” your way around. It was my personal favorite out of the other three pinakotheks, only because I’m very much interested in architecture, photography and furniture designs.
알테 미술관은 14세기에서부터 18세기의 독일, 네덜란드, 이탈리아, 스페인, 프랑스 작가들의 작품들을 전시. 곳곳에 공사 중이라 모든 작품을 볼 수는 없지만 건물 자체가 고급스러운 느낌. 2층의 카페는 (캐주얼한 대부분의 여행객들과는 다르게) 지나칠 정도로 고급스러운 분위기. 뭔가 반바지에 티셔츠 차림의 내가 민망할 정도.
노이에 미술관은 그 이후, 18세기부터 20세기의 작가들과 작품들을 전시하고 있다. 예를 들면 스페인의 낭만주의 작가 고야, 영국의 낭만주의 작가 터너, 여성의 관능적인 아름다움을 강조했던 르누아르, 발레리나들의 대가 드가 그리고 반 고흐의 작품들을 여기서 만날 수 있다. 많은 사람들이 좋아하는 반 고흐의 해바라기 시리즈의 일부분도 여기서 볼 수 있다. 참고해야할 것이 있다면 방들의 번호를 잘 보고 걸어다녀야한다는 것. (우리처럼) 잘못보고 미술관을 관람하기 시작하면 마지막에 접해야할 유명한 작품들을 먼저 접하면서 김이 약간 빠지는 상황이 발생할 수 있다.
현대미술관안에는 또 다른 미술관 네가지가 함께 공존 (근현대미술관, 그래픽 미술관, 디자인과 응용예술 미술관 그리고 건축미술관 정도로 해석). 가장 볼거리도 많고 인상적이었던 미술관이었다. 디자인, 건축, 사진 등 다양한 매체의 미술을 경험할 수 있고 크기도 커서 시간 보내기도 안성맞춤.
Because we were visiting Munich during a public holiday, we could not find a hotel that was either fairly affordable or close to the center, the Marienplatz area. So we tried out Airbnb for the first time. It was nice because the place was completely empty and was very close to the city center, but it was still spending your time at somebody else’s home, which was a bit strange overall.
Nevertheless, the owner was a student who was from Munich and he left some notes and tips on where to go. Big plus for Airbnb users. One of the places he recommended was Vorhoelzer Forum, which was a bar/cafe located on the rooftop of the Faculty of Architecture building of the Technical University of Munich, very close to the museums. It was nice to walk around the chilly halls of the university buildings (ah, memories) and when we found the bar up on the rooftop, I wanted to stay there all evening. Good drinks, nice-looking brunch, beautiful view but not much shade so if it’s summer, take a hat. Or an umbrella.
모든 미술관 관람 후 문밖으로 나오니 눈동자가 무지개색으로 변할 지경. 그래서 추천받았던 (비밀) 카페를 방문했다. 뮌헨 공대 건축학과 꼭대기층에 위치한 Vorhoelzer Forum인데 오랜만에 대학교안을 거니는것도 재밌고 올라가면 뮌헨 전체를 구경할 수 있게끔 만들어놓았다. 단점이 하나 있다면 여름에는 그냥 땡볕이라 (나같은 사람은) 모자, 혹은 우산을 가져가야 겨우 시간을 보낼 수 있다는 것. 30초도 못 앉아 있을 정도로 뜨거운 햇볕이 매력이라면 매력.
And the BMW museum. I’m planning on a more in-depth post about the famous museum, but coming from Stuttgart, the home of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, I have to say I was expecting a bit more. Nevertheless, excellent museum with a lot of history, cars, designs, but not so much interaction, pricy drinks and a not so strong AC system.
사실 BMW 박물관에 대한 기대가 컸다. 그래서인지 포르쉐 혹은 벤츠 박물관 도시에 살고 있는 우리에게 BMW박물관은 약간은 실망. 다양한 역사, 자동차, 디자인을 접할 수 있지만 볼거리가 조금은 덜한 느낌과 카페 음료가 엄청 비쌌다는 점, 그리고 에어콘이 너무 약해서 관람 끝에는 거의 바깥과 비슷한 공기를 견뎌야한다는 점.
The Dacau Concentration Camp took an entire day, yet I was glad I paid a visit. It was my first time actually visiting a concentration camp and although I have learned and know much about Korea’s own history of being under the rule of Japan, it was still quite a heavy moment to go through. I started out reading almost every little detail, but then it simply got too overwhelming, I had to walk by some of it in the end.
The information is impeccable, the audio and visual guides very helpful and it’s very detailed. Like the before and after photo of a young man’s first day at the camp, not really knowing what’s happening, and a few days later, exhausted and in fear. Or the striped clothes, caps and shoes the “prisoners” had to wear.
다카우 수용소. 나치 관련 다양한 선전물, 책, 기록 등을 볼 수 있고 생생한 사진과 영상도 볼 수 있다. 사실 일본 침략과 관련해 다양한 역사적인 사건과 책, 사진, 영상 등을 보고 배운 입장에서 유대인들의 실상, 나치의 선전물 등은 일반 독일인 혹은 서양인들보다는 충격이 덜 했던 것이 사실. 그럼에도 불구하고 처음에는 열심히 읽고 보다가 나중에는 마음이 무거워져 슬슬 걸어서 지나갔다. 오디오 가이드는 놀라울 정도로 구체적이었다. 방문하지 않고 이것만 들어도 그때의 상황이 그대로 느껴질 정도.
인상깊었던 사진이 있다면 한 유대인 청년의 전/후 사진. 처음 수용소에 들어왔을때 건장하고 겁은 먹었지만 반짝이는 눈빛의 청년은 몇주 후 같은 곳에서 사진이 찍히는데 비쩍 마르고 죽어있는 눈빛의 주인공이 되어버려 역사의 일부분을 그대로 보여주고 있었다. 역사적인 건물을 가면 늘 그렇듯, 벽이나 천장, 바닥이 말을 할 수 있다면 얼마나 끔찍할까라는 생각과 함께 다시 도시로 고고.
The Munich Hofbraeuhaus offers the ultimate Oktoberfest experience all year long and has been doing just that for the past 400 years. It’s open every day, including weekends and even Christmas, (which is a very big selling point, if you ask me) and caters to more than 3,ooo visitors daily.
It’s been host of Bavarian beer for a long time and the list of famous and very historical figures are quite impressive: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Vladimir Lenin, JFK, Josephine Baker and even Adolf Hitler. In fact, Hitler proclaimed the National Socialist program at this very place, which led to the reconstitution of the Nazi Party. But since Hitler did not drink alcohol, or eat red meat or even smoke for that matter, he used the beer hall more for political events and commemorations. And like many German institutions, it shows records of this history on the walls.
It was also the first place that implemented a specific law for food: the Reinheitsgebot or the Beer Purity Law in 1516 after breweries experimented with strange and sometimes deadly ingredients with their beers. (Some enthusiasts and beer experts believe this law discourages innovation when it comes to beer and its tastes. Then the believers argue that the law is what makes German beer truly German. Tricky controversy. I’m not yet sure which point I stand by.)
독일에서의 가장 재밌고 인상적인 이벤트라면 단연 옥토버페스트. 하지만 타이밍이 맞지 않는다면 뮌헨의 호프브로이하우스로 고고. 실제 옥토버페스트랑 비슷한 분위기를 느낄 수 있다. 지난 400년동안 시민들에게 맥주를 제공한 곳으로 지금도 매일 문을 닫지 않고 (아마도) 비슷한 분위기, 음식, 맥주르 제공 중. 히틀러가 나치즘을 선언했던 곳이 바로 이곳이다. 히틀러는 사실 술을 먹지 않아 이곳에서는 주로 정치적인 활동을 행했던 것으로 알려져 있다. 히틀러외에도 유명한 인물들이 많이 찾았던 곳인데, 예를 들면 모짜르트, 레닌, JFK 정도.
제대로된 식품법이 처음 적용되었던 곳도 바로 이곳이다. 맥주의 인기가 지금보다도 높았던 1516년, 다양하고 위험한 재료들로 실험하던 맥주 양조업자들을 제한하기 위해 만들어졌던 맥주순수령은 여기서 시작되었다. 아직까지 여기까지 피부로 느끼는 정도는 아니지만 조금씩 이 맥주순수령에 대한 불만의 목소리들이 생겨나고 있는 상황이다. 새로운 맛의 맥주를 원하는 실험파들과 독일맥주는 독일맥주다워야한다는 순수파들의 싸움아닌 싸움. 과거에는 밝혀지지 않은 재료들로 맥주를 만들어 사람들이 마시고 죽기도 했다는데 과학이 가미된 오늘날의 기술로는 그렇게 나쁜 아이디어만은 아닐 것 같은 느낌. 암스테르담과 브뤼셀의 다양한 맥주맛을 맛보고 나서 독일로 돌아와 맥주를 마시니 심심한 감도 없지 않아 있었던 것이 사실.
