Milan: The Duomo

The best roof I’ve ever seen. At least for now. 

I’m not really such a fashion person. I’m more into interior, illustrations, photography and my wardrobe is consisted of clothes under the color categories black, grey family, blue family and a small selection of colors/patterns. But the world of instagram, which is my favorite app at the moment, has led me to the whirling world of fashion, also known as fashion week. And since it was Milan’s turn to present its stand on the fashion world, I brought back and reorganized Milan photos hidden from my previous blog.

현재 가장 애용하는 앱이 바로 인스타그램. 주로 인테리어, 음식, 내가 좋아하는 블로거, 여행, 미디어 그리고 친구들을 팔로우하는데 패션위크의 계절이라 그런지 유독 패션에 관한 사진과 글들이 눈에 띈다. 뉴욕에 이어 방금 끝난 밀라노, 그리고 곧 파리로 이어질 패션위크를 기념해 (?) 패션 도시 밀라노의 자랑, 두오모 성당 등장. 다양한 도시의 다양한 성당과 교회들을 많이 가봤지만 가장 기억에 남고 다시 가도 놀라운 성당이 두오모. 이탈리아의 위기라고 이탈리아인들은 물론 유럽인들이 이야기하고 걱정하지만 (요즘 모이기만하면 토론 주제) 두오모를 보면 이렇게 아름다운 성당을 만들 수 있는 정신력과 실력이면 위기 극복하고도 남을것이라는 믿음이 절로 든다.

“The central one of its five great doors is bordered with a bas-relief of birds and fruits and beasts and insects, which have been so ingeniously carved out of the marble that they seem like living creatures– and the figures are so numerous and the design so complex, that one might study it a week without exhausting its interest…everywhere that a niche or a perch can be found about the enormous building, from summit to base, there is a marble statue , and every statue is a study in itself…”

국교가 카톨릭이긴 하지만 사실 개인적으로 이탈리아인들보다 독일인들이 더 “종교적.”  종교세도 열심히, 솔직히 내고 성당이나 교회도 일단 가기로 하면 가는 편. 반면 G를 포함한 우리가 아는 이탈리아인 친구들 이나 동료들은 그렇게 독실하지 않은 느낌.

The Duomo has the most magnificent roof I have ever seen in my life. Like many other cathedrals, you can walk up the stair to see the view, and for Duomo’s case, the beautiful architecture that adorns the entire roof. Whenever I go up or even enter any cathedral, which happens whenever we travel to a different city, I find myself comparing with the Duomo. The closest awestruck experience was the La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, which isn’t even finished. And yes, there were some huffing and puffing along the way with fellow tourists sighing and stopping midway, but it wasn’t that bad. (There was this Japanese man in his 40s who was sighing so hard I had to check on him every thirty seconds just in case he fainted. His face turned white when we finally reached the top.)

내가 본 지붕 중에서는 최고로 멋진 지붕이 두오모. 다른 성당이나 높은 건물들은 주변 경치를 둘러보기 위해 올라가지만 두오모는 그뿐 아니라 성당위의 건축물과 장식물들을 보기 위해 올라갈 정도. 뭔가 웅장하면서도 슬픈 느낌. 엘레베이터도 있지만 일단 기다리는 시간이 너무 길고 돈도 더 내야해서 걸어 올라갔는데 늘 그렇지만 일단 올라가면 힘든 것도 다 잊어버리게 된다.  두려워했던 것과는 달리 해볼만하다.

The construction for the cathedral began in 1386 and took nearly six centuries to complete, but still undergoes small building work here and there. It’s the largest cathedral in the Italian state territory and has some 3,100 to 3,500 sculptures in and out the building, which is the most in the world. It began in brick, but was upgraded to marble, and currently there are 130 employees running the beautiful building. The little gold statue called the Madonina, or Little Madonna, is so important that no other building can surpass the height of it, by law.

디자인 측면에서는 바티칸 못지 않게 화려하고 아름다운 밀라노의 두오모. 1386년에 공사가 시작되었지만 완공은 60년이 지난 후. 이탈리아에서 가장 큰 성당으로 알려져 있고 성당 전체를 장식하는 장식물들의 수는 무려 3,100-3,500개, 세계에서 가장 많은 수를 자랑한다. 현재 130명의 직원들이 일하고 있으며 처음에는 벽돌로 공사가 시작되었지만 후에 대리석으로 업그레이드 되었다. 성당 꼭대기에 있응 금색 마리아 장식은 종교적으로, 문화적으로 그리고 역사적으로 중요한 유물이라 어떤 건물도 이 작은 마리아보다 높을 수 없도록 법으로 지정했다고.

A must see aside from the actual Duomo is the Duomo Museum. They don’t allow photos, which was fine, but it really made me think again how crazy Italians were when they were working on the Duomo. There are more than 3,500 sculptures that adorn the structure today, but these were just a handful of what professional sculptors and artists made for the cathedral. Only a handful. If you ever wondered about the whereabouts of such samples, or even wondered how they managed to make so small, intricately detailed sculptures, the Museo del Duomo may offer some answers. There’s one room with Jesus in various forms, sizes, different expressions, poses and another with drapes, half draped, fully draped, side draped and so on. I was in complete awe from start to finish. The museum opened in November, 2013.

대망의 두오모 박물관. 사진 찍는것이 허용되지 않아 안타까웠지만 최근 가 본 박물관 중에서는 단연 최고. 밀라노 두오모를 장식하는 크고 작은 석조 장식이 한 3,500여개는 된다는데 미리 만들어놓은  장식들은 거의 두세배였다. 그 많은 장식 중 최고로 아름다운 3,500개만 선택받은 것. 나머지 작품들은 남겨졌다가 박물관이 개관하면서 비로소 빛을 보게 되었다. 예를 들어 예수 조각상만 모아놓은 방이 있는데 다양한 크기부터, 포즈, 표정, 모양을 이루고 있다. 너무 완벽해서 도대체 누가 어떻게 올라갈 조각상, 안올라갈 조각상을 택했는지 의문이 들 정도. 아름다움의 의미, 혹은 이탈리아인들에게 아름다움이 갖는 의미를 생각하게 하는 순간.

• Terazza Aperol: if you are up for some drinks and snacks. 두오모 바로 옆에 위치한 칵테일 바.
• Milano Centro: for a not too fancy, yet not too casual lunch or dinner. Close to the cathedral.
• Antica Trattoria della Pesa: paid a visit with some friends and it was amazing. The entire street is lined up with famous, traditional restaurants. Try the risotto all Milanese, involtini di verza or the cassoela. 밀라노 출신 친구들과 함께 갔던 레스토랑. 밀라노 전통음식으로 알려진 리조또, 양배추말이, 돼지고기찜 추천.
