Alsace Wine Route: Around town #1

November 30, 2014 by rachelsanghee

Little French town charms. alsace1

When I first went to Strasbourg, I was shocked on how pretty, full of life and just overall very entertaining and lovely it was. As much as I appreciate Paris (the macarons, the streets, the little corner bars and cafes and the shopping), the small city helped me appreciate the smaller village and cities around Europe. The trip to the Alsace wine route for wine tasting was, in fact, the perfect experience to enjoy tiny villages with all its charms. We were six people, five Italians and one Korean, and we had one plan: wine tasting. Plans were made inside the car we rented for the trip and although we vaguely knew which city to go, we decided to wing the details and go for a rather casual trip. Either way, we would end up drinking (and purchasing) a lot of wine, so everyone was on board with the plan.

It takes about three hours to Alsace (from Stuttgart) and the first town was Mittelbergheim, which is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, an independent association of the “most beautiful villages of France.” Autumn was in full bloom, so while others walked around, searching for wineries and more information, I, more than once, fell behind to take photos.

One very happy Italian, waiting to gobble up some wine. Which we all did.

The village was like a little wine festival. Like many other villages we visited in the course of two days.

The Mont Sainte-Odile Abbey is on the top of the Mont Sainte-Odile, the most famous mountain range in the French region of Alsace. It’s a lovely, secluded place that was founded in around 690 by Saint Odile, the daughter of a French duke of the area. It’s where you can see the entire region and on sunny days you can even see the famous Strasbourg Cathedral.

I have a thing for skies and branches.  I realized I did a similar thing here and here.
