Seoul: Dongdaemun Design Plaza

Back to regular scheduling, starting with a very futuristic design hub in Seoul. 

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza, easily known as the DDP, made headlines when it was announced that the internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid was the head designer. It was officially opened in 2014 and, considering all the photos and blog posts about it online, I was a bit late on the bandwagon.

The DDP is a 38,000 square meter cultural complex that hosts various events and facilities, including performances, exhibitions, markets, libraries, seminars, conventions and fairs. Located in one of the busiest fashion districts in Seoul, it definitely stands out from everywhere and this mostly is due to the curvy and shiny aluminium panels that cover up the entire structures. Very digital. On a side note, this may be a personal thing, but I had to wonder whether anyone bothered to check if the acronyms DDP also meant something else, say, the German Democratic Party? The political party no longer exists, but it did make me wonder nevertheless.

점점 시간이 지날수록 시차 적응하기가 어려워지는데 이게 이렇게 슬플 수가 없다. 적당히 적응이 된 월요일 아침, 처음으로 방문한 동대문 디자인 플라자 포스팅 고고. 지나가기도 많이 지나가고 사진도 많이 봤지만 실제로 들어가 본 적은 처음. 확실히 어느쪽에서 보나 멋진 건물들임은 틀림이 없는데 DDP를 인터넷에 치자마자 독일민주당에 대한 정보가 나와서 (지금은 해산되어서 크게 상관은 없을 수 있지만) 이름을 정하기 전에 조금 더 고민이 있었으면 하는 아쉬움이.

The plaza is officially made up of four quite similar looking areas or “halls” and a park: the Art Hall, a museum, a Design Lab, a Design Market and the Dongdaemun History and Culture Park. It can get a bit confusing getting to one place to another, so I would recommend picking up a map to navigate.

The buildings are sleek, futuristic, curvy, fluid and urban and everything else it states that it is, but more than that, it was personally the best place to buy souvenirs. And when I say souvenirs, I mean high quality, not too expensive yet functional, useful and stylish products, including books, bags, stationary, postcards and accessories. Also a great place to discover some very talented products and local designers. I’ve seen a lot of photos of the exterior, but never read about the interior and what it actually offered. I have to say I was impressed.

가장 마음에 들었던 곳은 디자인 마켓이라고 불리는 곳. 다양한 디자인 제품과 국내 디자이너들의 작품과 제품들을 찾을 수 있는데 인사동에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 기념품에 질린 사람이라면 추천. 한국 사람인데 한국 기념품을 사는 사람, 저입니다.

엽서! 카드! 계속 이런 식으로 기념품을 만들어주세요. 이 옆에는 한류 스타들, 혹은 K-스타, 와 관련된 기념품도 파는 곳이 있었는데 너무 비어있어서 내가 다 미안할 정도. 지금 생각해보면 연예인과 관련된 기념품, 그것도 연예인의 얼굴이나 모습이 직접 나와 있는 기념품을 이렇게나 다양한 종류로 만드는 나라도 드물것 같다는 생각이.

인테리어는 주로 화이트가 주제였는데 몇몇 공간들은 너무 화이트라서 불편할 정도.

The white roses are on the top floor of the building and one of the most popular photo spots in the entire area. There are so many people taking selfies, which I’m still not used to watching, let alone doing.

사진 찍기를 좋아하는 사람이라면 최적의 장소. 어떻게 찍어도 UFO를 찍은것 같은 효과가 나는데 사실 아쉬움이 한가지 있다면 동대문 운동장 주변의 쇼핑몰들과의 조화. 두타, 밀리오레와 다른 10여곳의 쇼핑몰들의 건물 모양, 색, 장식들이 심할 정도로 따로 노는 느낌.

또 하나 특이한 점은 특히 셀카봉을 들고 다니는 사람들의 위력을 다시 한번 느낄 수 있었던 곳이었다는 것. 개인적으로 셀카를 찍는 것이 아직도 어색해서 서울 도착부터 출발까지 셀카봉을 몇번 들었다놨다 했는데 (롯데 지하상가, 이마트, 롯데마트, 지하철 주변의 상가 등) 결국 구매로 이어지지는 못했다. 아주 약간 후회 중.

• Dongdaemun Design Plaza: The official websites by the government are pretty bad: soulless, dry and reads like a manual. Zaha Hadid’s version is a bit better, but offers more of an architectural point of view.
