Prague: The RR effect

Again comes the power of red roofs. I’m now calling it the RR effect.It took me a while to realize the beauty of Prague. In Florence, the shock was immediate. I was amazed by the red roofs, pink skies and fairy lights all around the buildings and trees. We were not very lucky with the weather in Prague, and the season too, but nevertheless, we were at least able to enjoy the scenery without being poked in the eye with an umbrella.

프라하를 제대로 느끼려면 역시 높은 곳에 올라가야 한다. 프라하 성으로. 어떻게 올라가지 고민하고 있는데 알고보니 바로 코앞까지 트램이 데려다준다. 지금까지 가본 도시 중에서 프라하처럼 교통이 편리한 곳은 드물었다. 물론 독일도 전차가 있긴하지만 역들이 다 떨어져있고 일단 내려서 목적지를 찾으려면 시간이 걸리는데 프라하는 주요 목적지까지 바로 앞까지 데려다준다.

The beer of the Czech Republic, Pilsner Urquell. This name is actually German. The original is Plzeňský Prazdroj. It comes from Pilsen, a small city in the west of the Czech republic. The word Pilsner is actually a type of pale lager and it was produced in Pilsen from 1842. The original beer is still produced here. What Germans call Pils is Pilsner.

체코의 대표적인 맥주 필스너 우르켈. 우리가 알고 있는 이 이름은 독일식이다. 필젠이라는 체코 서쪽지방의 작은 도시에서 발명, 1842년부터 지금까지 맥주를 만들어내고 있다. 독일에서 필스, 필스 하는 필스가 바로 맑은 라거 필스너의 줄임말. 체코의 맥주 양조업자들이 만들때마다 맛이 달라 고민하던 차에 독일인 양조업자에게 기술을 전수, 결국 함께 맛있는 맥주를 만들어냈다는 훈훈한 이야기.

프라하는 유럽의 붉은 지붕의 위력을 다시 한번 느끼게 해준 도시. 개인적으로 이 붉은 지붕의 위력은 피렌체에서 너무 강하게 받아서 쇼크가 덜하긴 했지만 프라하도 역시 붉은 지붕의 도시였다. 기대가 너무 커서였나, 주요 박물관들이 공사로 인해 문을 닫아서였나, 음식이 너무 헤비해서였나, 비가 주룩주룩 와서였나, 100% 만끽하지는 못한 느낌.

아마도 큰 어려움 없이 여행지의 삼박자 (교통, 볼거리, 먹을거리)가 너무나도 잘 갖추고 있어서였던 것 같다. 이 도시만의 비밀 레스토랑, 책에는 나오지 않는, 어쩌다가 우연히 발견한 장소에 들러줘야하는데 교통도 빠르고 편리하고 볼거리도 모두 다닥다닥 붙어있고 먹을거리도 찾기 쉽고 도시 하나를 손바닥 위에 펼쳐놓은 느낌. 좋게 생각하면 그만큼 여행하기도 쉽고 몇일만에 도시 하나를 거의 정복할 수 있다.

This cafe was so pretty with the open scenery, but it was too cold to drink anything. It’s on the way down from the Prague castle and toward the tram stations. Speaking of trams, moving from one place to another in Prague is so easy and convenient. It was what made our travels so much easier and enjoyable. I agree that getting lost during travels is inevitable, but that’s when you get lost like once or twice for about 20 minutes. Not ever time you step into a new street for more than an hour. Everything in Prague was so well connected and easy to find.

나름 날씨가 추웠는데 밖에서 저렇게 맥주를 마셔주는 관광객들. (독일인 아니면 러시아인으로 추정) G는 따뜻한 남쪽 이탈리아에서 나고 자라서 조금만 날씨가 추워져도 벌벌 떨기 시작, 바람이 조금만 불기 시작하면 장갑, 모자, 지퍼 모두 쫙쫙 올리고 다닌다.
