The sister island of Murano, but with a lot more character. And a lot of color.
One thing I noticed when I was traveling around Venice, Rimini and other cities were lace everything. Lace shorts, lace shirts, lace bikinis (appropriate ones) lace shoes, lace bracelets, lace bags, lace everything. I hadn’t really noticed this last year when I was in Italy, so either I was a bit ignorant or lace is big at the moment. And if it’s big, either for the moment or in anyone’s fashion life, Burano is the place to be. Burano is the neighboring island of Murano and although it’s hard not to notice the colorful houses lined up on the canals, it’s actually historically famous for its lace and lacemaking. The history goes way back to the 1500s. The famous Burano lace was first produced by nuns and gradually made up it way to the daily routines of the wives of many fishermen who lived on the island.
사람 구경처럼 재밌는것도 없는데 베니스처럼 관광객이 많은 도시에서는 특히나 그렇다. 우리는 주로 어느 나라 사람일까를 주제로 퀴즈를 하곤 하는데 주로 옷차림이나 헤어 스타일, 표정 등으로 판단. 물론 예외는 있지만 우리가 만들어낸 기준은: 등산복, 혹은 등산복 브랜드의 옷이나 가방을 많이 입고 들고 있으면 독일인, 큰 티셔츠, 버뮤다 팬츠, 쪼리면 대체적으로 미국인 (주로 남자), 이탈리아인들은 손동작이 워낙 심해 찾기 쉽고, 러시아인이나 헝가리쪽은 얼굴느낌으로 판단하는 정도.
여자의 경우에는 패션이 워낙 다양해 알아차리기 힘들었는데 그 중 이번 여름에 유행하고 있던 아이템이 바로 레이스. 미국인, 일본인, 이탈리아인할것 없이 모두 레이스 아이템 적어도 한가지 정도는 가지고 있었을 정도. 우연히 우리가 찾은 부라노라는 섬은 바로 이 레이스의 생산지였다. 1500년대부터 만들어진 레이스는 주로 수녀님들의 부업이었다가 어부들의 마을이었던만큼 차차 어부들의 부인들이 그 자리를 대신해 지금도 그 전통이 이어지고 있다.
Walking along the shops of lace, I remembered the Cruciani bracelet that was oh so popular in Korea abou three years ago. They are in fact also popular in Italy, but I never found myself buying one. I’ve been in the shops and all, but never managed to get one. I’m a bit picky and strange when it comes to jewelry and for the Cruciani, it was double the thoughts, things like “are they going to change color and shape over time?” “am I going to have to wash them when they get dirty?” “Oh my god, which color, shape?” (I just learned that the Cruciani brand doesn’t just make bracelets, but they offer clothes, cashmere, wallets and fabric/yarn)
And the buildings. It’s like any kid’s dream here. The houses were painted these bright colors to help fishermen find their way home. Foggy, rainy days? Color your house shocking pink or royal blue. According historical records, the early settlers of Burano arrived even before the Roman colonization. Being a bit far from the mainlands and also Venice, it was easy to hide from invasion and also sicknesses. Even nowadays when somebody living in Burano needs a new paint job, they need to register and then the government will give them a selection of possible colors according to the neighborhood.
레이스도 레이스지만 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 아무래도 색색깔의 집들. 사실 집들을 이렇게 다양한 밝은 색으로 칠한데는 이유가 있었다. 비가 오고 구름이 많은 동네임을 감안, 깜깜할때 집 찾기가 어려웠던 어부들을 위해 동네별로 구역을 지정, 특정한 색들로 집들을 칠했던 것. 지금도 새로운 색으로 집을 칠하고 싶으면 정부에 알려 정해진 색들로만 칠해야한다고. 아무곳이나 서서 사진을 찍어도 예쁘게 나오는 곳. 참고로 아이유가 “하루끝”이라는 노래의 뮤비를 찍은 곳도 부라노.

- Burano is a boat ride away from Venice. It usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes with the water bus, or the vaporetto.
