The greener side of Edinburgh.
I already covered Old Town, so on with the New Town. The New Town is the more central area of Edinburgh and shows off the original Georgian period architecture, making it a history lesson by itself. It’s also one of the main shopping areas with fancy department stores, modern bars and designer shops lining up the streets. And the Princes Street Gardens. It’s very hard not to pass it when you are venturing around the New Town, plus it’s always fun to see people picnic-ing on the grass. We personally didn’t stop for a picnic or anything because we were more into drinking as much beer and cider as possible, but if it wasn’t for this particular reason I may have persuaded my group of three.
And of course, you have to pay a visit of the official residence of Queen Elizabeth in Scotland: the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It’s quite a palace and there are almost always special exhibitions held inside, plus the gift shop is quite impressive. It’s also one of the most popular must-see sights for Japanese travelers for some reason.
Calton Hill. The reason why some people and magazines and travel books call Edinburgh the “Athens of the North.” The Holyrood Palace is actually at the end of the hill. There’s also the National Monument (which looks like Athen’s Parthenon and was in fact modelled after it. I do not recommend climbing up there, especially if you are wearing a skirt. Even if the people looking at you are strangers, if you have a skirt on, please don’t.), the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument and a couple of others. Plus you get a great view of the city, both Old Town and New.
The Edinburgh Castle way out in the background.
The Dugald Stewart Monument does remind you of the Roman, Greek structures, and this was also in fat modelled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. It was built as a memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart in 1831.
In most cases I like to recommend restaurants, bars and cafes of the cities I visit. Like the Dresden Neustadt post or the Amsterdam post. But in the case of Edinburgh, I found it quite meaningless to recommend one or two places because for one, there are just so many bars and cafes where you can enjoy a pint or two and second, because the ambiance is so different. Some were sports bars, some were a bit fancier than others, some had a television, some didn’t, some had live music, some had jazz, some where underground while others were on the roof. And they are all so close to one another, it’s so easy and fun to decide where you actually want to sit down and enjoy beer. Or in my case, cider.
Like I said, this was a bar we just happened to stumble upon. I tend to get shaky after I drink a pint or two, so the photos are a little bit shaky. Woops.
And the signboards. The wonderful, quirky world of signboards.

[…] Calton Hill’s nickname is the “Athens of the North” and it’s where you can get a glimpse of the beautiful city of Edinburgh, both Old and New. On a sunny day, you can even see the Edinburgh Castle way out in the background. It’s also a good way to start the entire trip, as you can easily map out the famous attractions and decide where to go and when. Because, let’s face it, there’s way too much things to do in this city. For more, click here. […]
