Barcelona: The faces

The many faces that adorn the majestic La Sagrada Família.

There are two great architects and sculptors when it comes to the La Sagrada Família: Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Subirachs. While Gaudí’s works are more traditional, realistic and emotional, Subirachs tends to mix his own personality to the already well known tale of Jesus. They clearly have distinctively different styles and personalities, but they mesh surprisingly well into the great cathedral that is the La Sagrada Família. In the end it wasn’t the style that mattered, but the emotional objective they were both aiming for.

It’s a similar sentiment I have sometimes when I’m talking to G. We are from different backgrounds, countries, cultures and even speak different languages, but in the end, we were and still are able to click when it comes to conversations. A lot of people, especially Koreans, ask me how I can communicate and “bond” with someone so different, but it honestly doesn’t matter that much: the language, hometown or even country. It’s like you know someone who is Korean, speaks Korean, grew up in similar circumstances but with whom you have nothing in common, and worst, nothing to talk about. It’s not about having different opinions, which is great, but nada. Blank, empty stares. The worst of the worst.

가우디와 가우디가 죽은 후 그의 뒤를 이어받은 건축가이자 조각가 수비라치의 작품들이 성당 전체를 꾸미고 있는데 둘의 건축, 조각 스타일은 신기하게도 굉장히 다르면서도 또 한편으로는 비슷하다. 스타일은 달랐지만 눈을 포함한 표정들이 결국에는 같은 이야기를 하고 있고 같은 감정을 이끌어내는 마성이 분명히 존재. G와 이야기를 하면서 느끼는 비슷한 감정인데 언어와 문화는 다르지만 결국에는 같은 생각, 같은 감성을 느낄 수 있다는 것. 언어, 나라, 문화 등의 공통점이 있는데도 그렇게 말이 안통하는 사람이 있는것과 같은 이치.

가우디의 작품들은 섬세하고 어쩌면 로맨틱하기까지할 정도로 표현이 실제적인 반면 수비라치의 작품들은 매끈하고 각이 선 느낌. 서로 다르기도 하지만 비슷한 주제와 비슷한 감정들을 주제로 만들어진 조각들인만큼 나름 조화를 이룬다. 무엇보다도 한 명의 거장이 끝내지 못한 일을 그대로 이어받아 본인의 스타일을 추구하면서도 조화롭게 만들어내간 그 역사가 감동적. 수비라치도 가우디와 마찬가지로 성당의 완공을 지키지 못하고 지난 4월에 타계했다.
