Paris: the Louvre

The museum of all museums. So they say.

So during my last trip to Paris, we managed to schedule our time a bit better and squeeze in the Louvre. It was also raining pretty hard and there was no point in walking outside with the rain and the wind. A rainy Paris has its charms, but it was getting a bit ridiculous with our umbrellas flipping over every three minutes.

When it comes to museums, I’m a little bit picky and I do pick favorites: I preferred the Musée d’Orsay over the Musée de l’Orangerie, didn’t really enjoy the Centre Georges Pompidou (but this may be because I’m still learning and adventuring more about modern art) so I was very much looking forward to my first Louvre experience. The key was to get there as early as possible to avoid the lines and in our case, getting soaked. After purchasing tickets, we held up the museum map, which is crucial, and brainstormed strategies. The quite obvious goal was to “meet” the Mona Lisa, considering it would be the most crowded and then travel through the deep, dark, halls of art and history.

박물관중의 박물관이라는 루브르. 두번째 파리 여행때 드디어 방문. 계속 아껴두려는 심정으로 따로 루브르 박물관만 가는 파리 여행을 마음속으로 계획하고 있었는데 비가 너무 많이 오고 바람이 너무 많아 불어서 결국 그 약속은 지키지 못했다. 박물관이나 미술관에 있어서는 까다로운 편이다. 전문적인 계산이나 예술가의 지식과는 상관없는 개인적인 좋고 싫고가 나오는 정도. 공간 활용이 조금 불안정했던 오랑제리보다는 오르세가 훨씬 좋았고 현대 미술이 대부분인 조루즈 퐁피두 센터는 매력을 많이 느끼지는 못했다. 하지만 루브르는 박물관의 정석 느낌: 건축, 미술, 역사, 공간, 조각 등 박물관이 기본적으로 갖춰야할 자질들을 적당히, 골고루 갖추고 있는 곳.

There’s actually a viewing point for the Nike of Samothrace, or more widely known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace. While facing the artwork, walk a few steps to the right, which would mean you are looking at her left side, and you can see her glorious wings, beautifully crafted robe and the wind blowing through the fabric. Like many other destroyed artwork, it’s quite a quest to understand and even recreate the image of the original. Many historians have stated that she must have been holding some type of object, a wreath or trumpet, but according to later discoveries of her hands, it was concluded that she mostly likely was not holding anything, but waving or greeting with her fingers spread out.

사모트라케의 니케는 사실 약간 오른쪽에 서서 그녀의 왼쪽을 향해 감상해줘야한다는 규칙 아닌 규칙이 있었다. 그래야만 그녀의 날개, 옷의 주름, 바람의 느낌 등을 완벽하게 감상할 수 있다는 것. 팔 부분이 없어서 많은 사람들이 상상의 나래를 펼쳤지만 역사적으로 보았을때 가장 가능성이 높은 포즈는 인사를 하듯 가볍게 손을 흔들고 있는 모습이라고.

The infinite halls of the Louvre. So many selfie sticks. I don’t have one (yet) and I’m a bit torn. I understand it can get you the best selfies, but then I still agree that it can be a bit bothersome for others. I already feel bad that I take photos of my food before eating so I can’t imagine myself adding more minutes with the selfie stick.

The (tiny) Mona Lisa and all her fans. Such a historical moment, but with other 50 people standing behind you, in front of you, beside you and just everywhere. The guards warn you to look after your bags and wallets throughout the museum, and in fact an actual robbery happened right as I was taking this photo. An Asian man claimed someone took his wallet while he was taking photos of the Mona Lisa and instantly four to five men, who, I am assuming to be security guards, were dressed in dark colors, swooped into the room and started searching for the thief. I didn’t stay long enough to see what happened, but do beware when watching the Mona Lisa.

모나리자를 실제로 본 사람이라면 꼭 느끼는 것이 있다면 생각보다 굉장히 작은 크기. 하지만 그렇게 작은 모나리자앞에 줄 서 있는 사람들의 모습을 보면 주변에 있는 다른 작품들에게 미안할 정도였다. 모나리자 주변에 사람들이 워낙 많기 때문에 소매치기들도 특히나 많다고 주의를 주는데 실제로 어느 한 여행객의 지갑이 없어지는 상황 발생. 흥분한 여행객이 모나리자 옆에 서 있던 보안관에게 이야기하자 (영화처럼) 여행객으로 가장하고 숨어있던 다른 보안관들이 주변을 둘러싸고 범인을 찾기 시작. 결국 잡지는 못했던 것 같은데 다시 한번 지갑, 가방 조심하게 해준 계기.

The museum is a part of the Louvre Palace, which was a former royal palace and home of Louis XIV before he moved to the Versailles. Try to look out the windows. I may have not seen every single artwork, but I did try to appreciate the view from the inside. The architecture itself is a great piece of artwork in itself and it’s easy to pass by it.

감히 추천을 하자면 박물관 안의 모습만큼이나 아름답고 보기 힘든 밖의 모습들. 박물관 건물 자체가 루이 14세가 베르사유로 이사를 가기 전에 머물렀던 궁전이었던 만큼 화려한 장식물, 작품들을 찾을 수 있는데 밖에서 보는 것과는 확실히 다른 느낌이다. 사실 안에 전시되어 있는 작품들이 워낙 방대해서 무의식적으로 마음이 급해지는 상황이 발생하는데 잠깐 밖을 내다보는 것도 안정을 되찾을 수 있는 좋은 방법.

The most beautiful woman in the world, Aphrodite of Milos or the Venus de Milo. Interestingly enough, though, she became famous not only because of her quite obvious beauty, but also as part of a very effective propaganda effort by the French authorities. The France had returned the very famous Medici Venus to the Italians after it was looted from Italy and once the French “lost” one of the finest sculptures in world, they started to promote Venus as the “greater” treasure. And it worked. But nonetheless, it does take your breath away. There are some examples of how she must have looked when she had arms, but to be honest, they all look quite awkward.

밀로의 비너스. 완벽한 균형을 가진 몸매라고 해서 미의 전형으로 알려져 있는 그녀. 워낙 해부학적으로, 미학적으로 그리고 비례적으로 아름다워서 유명해진 것도 분명히 있지만 그녀의 아름다움과 인기 뒤에는 프랑스인들의 끈질긴 노력이 있었다.

프랑스는 한때 이탈리아의 유명한 조각 메디치의 비너스를 소장하고 있다가 다시 이탈리아에 돌려주게 되는데 세상에서 가장 아름다운 조각 중 하나를 “빼앗긴” 프랑스는 나름 작은 복수를 준비. 그들이 소장하고 있던 밀로의 비너스가 훨씬 아름답고 역사적으로 더 큰 의미가 있다는 기사, 연구 등을 끈질기게 배포하고 주장하면서 그때까지만 해도 지금처럼 유명하지 않았던 밀로의 비너스가 미의 전형으로 자리잡은 것. 나름 성공한 것이 메디치의 비너스는 어떻게 생겼는지 생각도 안난다는 것. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 분명한 것은 그녀는 정말 눈이 부시게 아름답고 앞에 서 있으면 아무말도 안나온다는 사실. 다들 “허허, 거참. 아름답네.”

Reading Egyptian writings was always a fascinating thing for me. And I stood in front of this quite a long time, reading and trying to understand how the process worked.

The Code of Hammurabi, which is one of the oldest deciphered writings of such length in the world and also the longest surviving text from the Old Babylonian period. It consists of 282 laws, including the famous “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” Surprisingly, it presents one of the earliest examples of idea of presumption of innocence and the importance of evidence.

책에서나 배웠던 함무라비 법전. “눈에는 눈, 이에는 이”라는 탈리오의 법칙 등 계급적 법제도가 적힌 성문법. 왠만해서는 성당이나 교회안 말고는 잘 안숙연해지는 편인데 인종이나 문화 등을 초월한 이 위대한 고대 바빌로니아 유물 앞에 저절로 숙연해졌다.
