Visiting Giovinazzo is always a treat, especially when the weather is warmer but not yet sizzling hot. This trip was two days after the Germanwings accident, so everyone, including ourselves, was a bit nervous boarding the plane. The lady next to me seemed to have a hard time relaxing over turbulence, and I found myself clapping with everyone else once the plane touched the ground. Something I normally don’t do.
이탈리아에 있는 또다른 고향이라고도 이제 불릴 수 있는 Giovinazzo. 건물이며 가게며 이제는 어디에 뭐가 있는지도 다 알고 어디 빵이 제일 맛있는지, 어디 생선이 가장 신선한지, 어느 올리브집 아저씨네가 후한지도 아는 정도. 아시아인은 거의 찾기 힘든 곳이라 그런지, 혹은 바닷가 작은 마을이라 한산해서인지, 바쁜 일상에서 조금은 벗어날 수 있는 곳이 되었다. 미국으로의 출국이 얼마 안남은 날, 이탈리아 가족들과 작은 이탈리아 서쪽 마을을 방문했다.

Giovinazzo doesn’t get too cold during winter, but it’s still not the right time for any fishing. So during the colder months, most of the fishing activities come to a stop and the equipment are also left around near the port. The least important equipment, I would assume.
독일이나 서울만큼 추워지지는 않지만 나름 겨울도 쌀쌀해져서 이 기간동안에는 낚시가 활발하게 이루어지지 않는다. 그래서 요트나 낚시배들이 묶여져 있고 주변에는 낚시도구들이 널부러져 있는 상태.
I grew up most of my life in the big city and I sometimes find it interesting to know how different it would have been if I grew up in the seaside. I can get some hints from G, who loves the sunshine, raw, fresh seafood and gets a twinkle in his eye whenever he sees the sea, even on paper or on a screen. But I’m pretty sure there should be more than just fish and sunlight. And I guess that’s something I’ll learn and figure out in a daily basis now and the future.
아주 어릴때를 제외하곤 늘 큰 도시에서만 자라고 지냈던 나와 바닷가에서 나고 자란 G는 다른 점이 꽤 많다. 문화적인 것은 물론이겠지만 이탈리아 바닷가 마을과 대한민국 서울에서 자란 지리적인 부분에서는 차이점이 꽤 있다. 햇빛이나 바다를 보면 정신을 못 차린다는 점, 심할 정도로 해산물을 좋아하고 여름과 관련된 모든 행사와 이벤트, 음료, 음식을 사랑한다는 점. 음식과 햇빛말고도 다른 점은 많지만 단순히 성격인지, 지리적인 차이점인지는 아직은 확실치 않아 일단 판단 유보.
Taking a walk after lunch is like taking a walk before dinner, since it’s almost four or five. But because the sun is setting, the light is different and the color of the buildings around the ports change too.
해가 지기 전과 후. 햇빛때문에 전체적인 느낌이 달라질 수 밖에. 조금 더 로맨틱해지고 고전적인 느낌.
