Up, up and away (goes my fear of heights).
Getting high up is a habitual thing and G and I have done our fair share in Europe (here, here or here). And Chicago has three different places where you can enjoy, or even freak out, the view to the fullest: the Skydeck at the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, and the 360 Chicago and the Signature Lounge at the John Hancock Tower. If you can, do all of them, most preferably one at night and one during the day.
어느 도시를 가건 높은 곳에 가봐야 그 도시의 느낌…도 느낌이지만 일단 제일 경관이 좋은 것이 사실. 시카고에는 세군데가 있다: 윌리스 타워의 스카이덱과 존 핸콕 타워의 시그너쳐 라운지와 360 시카고. 놀이기구 느낌인 스카이덱과 360 시카고 모두 표를 사고 들어가야해서 다 하기엔 부담이 간다면 둘 중 하나를 하고 시그너초 라운지에 가서 칵테일이나 맥주 한잔 해보는 것도 좋은 방법. 대신 하나는 낮에, 하나는 밤에 해볼 것을 추천.
At the Skydeck, you ride the elevator and go up 442 meters. The screen inside the elevator shows you how far up you are getting, for instance “this is how high the Eiffel Tower is, folks,” and as much as it’s helpful, it’s a little terrifying when you actually think about it. So all in all, good job.
스카이덱은 생각보다 간단하다. 미국 대부분의 주요 시설에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 공항 검색대같은 검색대를 지나 엘레베이터를 타고 올라가 표를 산 후 다시 엘레베이터를 타고 올라가면 끝. 442미터까지 올라가는 엘레베이터안에서 스크린으로 여기는 에펠탑 높이입니다 등등으로 설명해주는데 처음에는 흥미롭다가 점점 실제로 상상해보게 되면 약간 무서워진다는.
Ta-daa. And then you have to wait to get into these glass cubes. There are a couple of these cubes around, so we basically tried almost all of them. There wasn’t really a long line in front of each of them when we were there, which was a Sunday, so it was no problem walking around and waiting for the cubes.
쨔잔. 차례를 기다렸다가 네모난 큐브에 들어가 사진, 셀카를 찍는 시스템. 이렇게 생긴 큐브들이 몇개가 있는데 이왕 표를 사고 올라온 것, 우리는 모든 큐브들에 들렀다. 사람들이 많지 않을때면 줄이 금방 휙휙 지나가서 꼭대기층에서 꽤 오랜 시간을 보낼 수 있기 때문에 스케줄 계획에 참고. 특히 전망, 배경이 다 달라서 어떤 곳은 괜찮은데 어떤 곳은 무서워서 발이 떨어지지 않는다. 고소공포증이 있다면 고민해볼 사항들.
For the night view, we managed to wait and go up for some cocktails at the Signature Lounge. The John Hancock Tower also has its own “attraction” called the 360 Chicago and the TILT. The latter seems a bit more thrilling because you stand on a platform and it literally tilts over the view. We didn’t get to try this one, but found yet another reason to visit Chicago soon.
밤에는 존 핸콕 타워의 시그니처 라운지에서 칵테일을 마실겸 밤 풍경을 즐기러 고고. 사실 존 핸콕에도 360스카이덱과 비슷한 기구가 있는데 스카이덱보다는 더 스릴있을 것 같은 느낌. 아래 동영상을 보면 알 수 있듯이 양쪽 손잡이를 잡고 있으면 창문이 앞으로 기울어지는 상황. 대신 두 손이 자유롭지 않아서 사진 찍기에는 조금 부담스러울 수 있지만 뭔가 놀이기구 같은 느낌이라 확실히 스릴은 두배일듯!
You need to show your IDs before you can go up to the Lounge, even if you have white hair and are clearly over the age, so there’s a small tip. The cocktails may not be the most experimental and the interior is also a teeny bit outdated, but the view. The view is everything and don’t mind the people who are practically glued to the windows to take the perfect shot. Like I did. And G. And our friends. Plus, the ladies room has one of the best views too, which is funny and weird because there’s also a line of ladies waiting to go to the restroom, but there’s also a line of ladies taking selfies next to the washstands. G confirmed there’s no window nor view in the men’s room. Sorry guys.
라운지에 올라가려면 미성년자인지 확인을 해줘야하는데 너무 버젓이 30대 중반인 사람도 100% 보여줘야한다. 기본 칵테일을 시키고 수다를 떨기 시작…하기도 전에 모든 사람들이 창문에 붙어 사진 찍기 시작. 중요한 팁은 여자 화장실의창문이 훨씬 크고 전망도 좋아서 화장실 간 여자들이 볼일보고 다들 셀카 삼매경이 된다는 것. 대신 안타깝게도 남자 화장실에는 이런 창문이 없다. 어떤 여자들은 화장실안에 있는 다른 여자들에게 양해를 구한 뒤 남편이나 남자친구를 데리고 들어와 사진을 찍기도 한다고.
