Let’s get straight to the point: the higher, the better. 
Planning an itinerary can be daunting, especially when it’s a famous or touristy place. But then there’s those basics, like vantage points where you can get a good view of the overall city or scenery or those very-famous-so-very-easy-to-be-disappointed-but-still-have-to-check-them-out places. The upside of such places is not just the view: you can also get an idea of where to go and what to do.
I tend to prefer more “traditional” places like cathedrals, hills or castles instead of the more modern takes such as skyscrapers, towers or attractions made just for the purpose of getting high. Not much mountains because I’m not really the hiking type, but when I’m in national parks, there will bound to be a mountaintop. I came up with a list of some of those vantage points to most of the cities I’ve been. So let’s get high, people.
어딜가던 버릇처럼 찾아가는 높은 곳들. 경치도 경치지만 볼 것, 할 것이 너무 많은 곳에서는 일단 높은 곳에서 어디부터 가야할지, 어느 위치부터 공격해야하는지를 알기 쉽도록 도와주기도 한다. 사실 높은 산이나 언덕에 올라가면 좋은 경치를 볼 수 있지만 개인적으로 등산을 그다지 즐기지 않기 때문에 찾아가게 되는 곳들은 대체로 교회, 성당 혹은 요새같은 곳들.
Tennessee, USA: The Clingman’s Dome
The Clingman’s Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains and it’s quite a hike. You can drive to the entrance but still have to walk up to the actual top. Maybe because we were exhausted from the hike to Rainbow Falls (which was great and all, but nothing spectacular), but it is rather steep and takes around 20 minutes. It wasn’t just us who thought it was a bit tough because everyone starts asking “are we there yet? how long to the top?” The “Dome” is more of a tower on top of the tip and although it was built in 1959, it looks very “Men in Black”-ish. 테네시에 갔었던 이유는 국립공원을 방문하기 위해서였다. 차를 타고 가는 중에도 점점 길들이 높아짐을 느낄 수 있는데 그 중에서도 가장 높은 포인트인 Clingman’s Dome. 1959년에 만들어졌지만 영화 맨인블랙에 나올법한 디자인! 따지고보면 그렇게 심하게 높거나 힘든 코스는 아닌데 올라가기전에 이미 무지개 폭포에 가느라 모든 에너지를 소비해서 우리에게는 나름 힘들었던 코스.
Venice, Italy: St. Mark’s Campanile or the St. Mark’s Cathedral
There are two locations where you can admire the gorgeous city of Venice: the St. Mark’s Campanile, or the bell tower, or the St. Mark’s Cathedral itself. The bell tower is doable, you don’t have to wait too long and it doesn’t have too many stairs. But the view. The canals, the boats, gondolas, tourists and the architecture. 산마르코 광장의 캄파닐레 종탑. 엘레베이터가 있어서 고마웠던 곳. 사실 베니스는 어디서 어떻게 보아도 아름답다는 함정이 있지만 일단 높은 곳에 올라가서 보면 그 감동이 두배. 올라가는 사람들로 기다리는 줄이 길다고 해도 꼭 기다렸다가 올라갈 것을 추천.
Chicago, USA: Skydeck, 360 Chicago and the Signature Lounge
Chicago has become one of my favorite cities and for good reason: the beautiful architecture, history and the food. The vantage points may not be surrounded by ancient statues or murals, but they are as modern as they can get. Thanks to the many skyscrapers, there are a couple of places you can get high: the most popular three are the Skydeck at the Willis Tower, the 360 Chicago and the Signature Lounge at the John Hancock Tower. The first two are more attractions than public spaces, so you do have to purchase a ticket and wait a bit for the view. The lounge is free of charge to enter (you do need to show your ID to get in), but you do need to get a beer or cocktail (or even dinner) for a seat and view. A little hint for the ladies: the ladies room at the Signature Room does have the best view. Sorry boys. For more, click here.
윌리스 타워의 스카이덱과 존 핸콕 타워의 시그너쳐 라운지와 360 시카고. 우리가 갔던 일요일에는 사람이 많지 않아서 꽤 할만했던 스카이덱. 사진을 찍을 수 있는 투명하고 네모난 박스들이 5-6개 있는데 모두 배경이 다르기 때문에 기다렸다가 모두 섭렵하고 돌아올 것을 추천. 시그너쳐 라운지는 바이자 레스토랑인데 올라가려면 신분증을 꼭 보여줘야한다는 번거러움이 있다. 머리가 하얀 할아버지가 들어가려도 꼭 신분증을 보여줘야하는, 독일보다도 엄격한 분위기. 대신 올라가면 멋진 야경을 볼 수 있다는 것. 참고로 여자 화장실 야경이 가히 최고. 남자친구나 남편을 대리고 들어오는 여자들도 있으니 참고.
Stuttgart, Germany: Fersehturm and various other locations
The Fersehturm, or the Television Tower, would be the first choice to see Stuttgart from above, but it’s undergoing renovation through December, 2015. So an alternate way would be going up high on one of the vineyards. An easy way to do this would be to take the Stuttgart City bus tour where you can stop at one of the most famous vineyards in town and take a look over the beautiful city. 언덕이 꽤 많아 포도농장과 와이너리가 꽤 많은 스튜트가르트. 그래서 아무 언덕이나 올라가도 쉽게 도시 전체를 볼 수 있다. 가장 쉬운 방법은 TV타워라고 불리는 곳에 올라가는 것인데 2015년 겨울까지 공사중이라 지금은 곤란. 대신 시티투어버스를 타고 포도농장 한가운데에 내리면 쉽게 도시 전체를 내려다 볼 수 있다.
Munich, Germany: Church of St. Peter
The Church of St. Peter. It’s the oldest Parish church in the city and it’s quite a walk up. Along with the Milan Duomo, the toughest one to date, at least for me. Very narrow, not much space and pretty dark. Plus there are a lot of people, which can be a good thing because this means you can stop to rest time to time. 올라가기가 밀라노의 두오모만큼 힘들었던 뮌헨의 Church of St. Peter. 너무 비좁고 깜깜한데다가 올라가고 내려오는 사람들로 복잡해서 꽤 시간이 걸린다. 사람이 많아서 좋았던 점은 중간 중간에 쉴 수 있었기 때문. 일단 올라가면 도시 전체까지는 아니지만 일단 시청을 한눈에 내려다 볼 수 있다는 점.
Brussels, Belgium: Atomium
The Atomium was built for the 1958 Brussels World Fair and is now more of a museum shaped like a unit cell of an iron crystal. You can take the escalator up to the top and see the beautiful surroundings through small windows. The sculpture itself is quite mesmerizing, plus you get a great view. For more, click here.
Atomium은 1958년 브뤼셀에서 열린 엑스포를 기념해 만든 건물이다. 중간에 있는 공들은 기념관 겸 박물관으로 이루어져 있는데 만화책으로 유명한 벨기에다보다 1958년에 나온 포스터, 엽서, 옷 등의 디자인 너무 세련되서 놀라움을 금치 못했다. 이런 세련됨이라니. 중간 중간에 설치된 에스켈레이터를 타고 올라가서 편안하게 주위 환경을 구경할 수 있다는 이점.
Athens, Greece: Acropolis
A rather obvious one would be the Acropolis. It may not seem so high, but you can see the entire city afar. And the ancient architectures work perfectly as the backdrop. Or vice versa. For more, click here.
아테네에서는 안갈 수 없는 아크로폴리스. 로마와 함께 고대 도시의 완벽함을 볼 수 있는 곳.
Turin, Italy: the Mole or Superga
The Superga is the best place to enjoy the city of Turin. Very doable, compared to others like the Duomo in Milan or Munich’s St. Peter, since you can drive up to the cathedral and take a very short, yet zigzaggy and dizzy flight up the stairs, but the views, very comparable. Plus, Trattoria Superga on the way up the cathedral has one of the best truffle cream pastas I have ever had in my life. 성당인 수페르가는 토리노의 높은 언덕에 위치하고 있다. 차를 타고 언덕에 올라가 성당내에 있는 짧은 계단을 오르면 이탈리아의 자동차 도시 전체를 내려다 볼 수 있다. 내려가는 길, 혹은 올라가는 길에 Trattoria Superga에 들러서 송로버섯 파스타를 먹어보도록. 수페르가말고도 “Mole”이라고 불리는 탑에 올라가서 도시 한가운데에서 경치를 감상할 수도.
Florence, Italy: Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most popular places in Florence and for a very good reason. It’s where you can see the beautiful buildings of the city, along with the sunset or even sunrise if you are up for it. It’s a bit of a climb, but not too difficult and the view is amazing indeed. Near the square is also the San Miniato al Monte, which is one of the most scenic churches in the country. The basilica may not be the most fashionable or prettiest, but the history. It all comes down to the history.
피렌체의 유명한 미켈란젤로 광장. 어디서 어떻게 찍어도 엽서같은 도시지만 광장에 올라가서 내려다보면 나도 그림 안에 들어가 있는 느낌. 광장에는 대신 가짜 가방이나 옷들을 파는 사람들이 많아 좀 시끄럽고 복잡해질 수 있지만 눈은 즐겁다.
Alsace, France: Mont Sainte-Odile
The region of Alsace is famous for many things, including wine, but if you want a clear view of the region, drive up to Mont Sainte-Odile. You can visit the Mont Saint-Odile Abbey and enjoy the most famous mountain range and even see the famous Strasbourg Cathedral if you are lucky and the weather helps out. Visit the abbey right before sunset and you’ll get a fantastic view (and colors!) of the area. For more, click here.
와인으로 유명한 알자스 지방. 높은 곳에 올라가기가 그리 어렵지는 않은 편인데 가장 유명한 곳 중 하나가 Mont Saint-Odile 수도원. 날씨가 좋은 날에는 스타르스부르의 성당까지도 볼 수 있다고.
Dresden, Germany: Frauenkirche
The Frauenkirche is one of the largest domes in Europe and very feminine, both architecturally and aesthetically. Unlike many other churches or cathedrals, there is a separate entrance to go to the top. An elevator takes you halfway up and you have to climb up a bit to the top, but it’s interesting because the little windows along the way enable you to see both in and out of the entire structure. Plus the view offers some of the best, and because the cathedral is located very close to the River Elbe, you can see both the Old and New Town at once. For more, click here.
굉장히 여성스러웠던 Frauenkirche. 드레스덴의 뉴타운과 올드타운을 한눈에 보고 싶다면 성당으로 고고.
Edinburgh, Scotland: Calton Hill
Calton Hill’s nickname is the “Athens of the North” and it’s where you can get a glimpse of the beautiful city of Edinburgh, both Old and New. On a sunny day, you can even see the Edinburgh Castle way out in the background. It’s also a good way to start the entire trip, as you can easily map out the famous attractions and decide where to go and when. 에딘버러의 칼튼 힐에 올라갔던 이유는 도시 전체를 보기 위해서였기도 했지만 이곳을 북쪽의 아테네라고 부른다고 해서 내심 확인하고 싶어서였다. 사실 에딘버러는 워낙 오래된 도시라 건물들이 다 여기가 저기 같고 저기가 여기 같아서 헷갈리기가 쉬운데 칼튼 힐에 올라가면 대충 감이 잡히는 느낌.
Milan, Italy: Duomo
The Duomo. This is where my slight obsession to vantage points started. It’s not just about the view at the Duomo, but the roof itself. Fantastic architecture and it’s amazing to see the ancient roof decorations mesh into the more modern architectural works of the city. Quite the climb though, but if you had to do one thing in Milan, this would be it. (And the Prada right next to the Duomo) For more, click here.
높은 곳의 왕이 있다면 밀라노의 두오모. 주변 경관도 경관이지만 두오모의 수많은 장식들과 주변 도시의 건물들, 하늘, 등이 어우러져서 예술 탄생. 밀라노에 처음 가는 사람에게 1순위를 정해보라고 한다면 밀라노의 두오모 꼭대기에 올라가는 것. (2순위는 바로 옆에 위치하고 있는 프라다 매장 지하 1층.)
Seoul, Korea: Namsan Tower
The Namsan Tower is a favorite and the easiest. Both night and day, the view is amazing and you can even find some interesting events happening around the tower. The famous photos you see of Seoul, with all the skyscrapers and lights? They were probably taken here. But if you want a different place to enjoy the view, check out the hills and mountains surrounding Seoul, or even the numerous bars and restaurants atop skyscrapers, such as Walking on the Cloud at the 63 Convention Center or Top Cloud in Jongro, just to name a few. But beware since these places are mostly reserved for couples, both young and old, that it can get a wee bit too romantic. If you need some air, try Bukchon Hanok Village.
서울의 남산이 가장 대표적인 곳이겠지만 사실 사람이 너무 많고. 아니면 수많은 빌딩 꼭대기에 위치하고 있는 레스토랑들인데, 이런 곳들은 대체로 커플이거나 프로포즈를 하기 위해서거나 특별한 날이거나…생각보다 북촌한옥마을도 괜찮은 경관을 제공한다는 점.
Santorini, Greece: Just look out anywhere
Santorini is already located pretty high up so it doesn’t really require a certain vantage point. Every hotel has a magnificent view, including the sea, surrounding mountains and volcanoes and the sunset. It’s basically everything you wished for. For more, click here.
산토리니는 휴화산이라 어딜 가도 아름답다. 예쁘다는 이야기가 너무 많아서 입과 귀가 아플 수 있지만 사실임. 특별히 어떤 곳을 따로 가지 않아도 밖에만 대고 사진을 찍으면 바로 엽서가 되는 곳. 다녀온 사람들이 다 너무 좋다고 너무 좋다고 해서 뭔가 의심을 할만도 한데 진짜 너무 예쁘고 로맨틱한 곳.
Bologna, Italy: Asinelli Tower
The Asinelli Tower is 97 meters high and was built in 1109. You have to walk up the 498 steps and I have to admit, it’s a bit scary. The steps are very narrow and it’s quite dark, so take that into consideration. It does’t take that long to go up, but there can be a lot of waiting for other people coming down or up because it’s just to narrow. But the view! Plus, one interesting fact about the tower: it’s the highest leaning tower in Italy. Higher than Pisa! For more, click here.
볼로냐의 아시넬리 타워는 97미터인데 피사의 탑처럼 약간 기울어져 있다. 피사의 탑만큼 화려하지 않아서 많이 알려지지 않았다고. 걸어서 거의 끝까지 올라갈 수 있는데 중간 중간 포기하고 싶은 순간이 있어서 그렇지 일단 올라가고 나면 멋진 이탈리아의 대학 도시, 볼로냐의 모습을 제대로 볼 수 있다. 재밌는 정보 하나는 이 아시넬리가 피사의 탑보다 높다는 사실.
Verona, Italy: Castel San Pietro
Castel San Pietro, if you want the lovely view of the city of Romeo and Juliet. It’s not the most popular touristic sight because it is a way out from downtown where the major attractions and shops are located but it’s worth the time and effort. You can also pay a visit to the Archeological Museum and the famous Roman Theater. It can be a hike, but a very good one for both body and soul. For more, click here.
산 피에트로 성에 올라가면 로미오와 줄리엣의 도시, 베로나의 풍경을 즐길 수 있다. 성과 고고학 박물관을 제외하고는 별거 없는 동네지만 올라가는 재미도 있고 일단 올라가면 이탈리아같기도 하고 피터팬이 날아다니던 런던 시내 같은 베로나의 모습을 볼 수 있다.
Prague, Czech Republic: Prague Castle
A rather easy one: Prague Castle. It’s not an actual point, but the castle is located quite high up so it offers a beautiful view of the city. Red roofs, chapels, cathedrals and the bridge, all in one take. Prague is such a beautiful city, I think it’s not really necessary to actually look for a place to overlook the city, but still. 프라하라면 프라하 성. 딱히 높은 곳이라고 찾아가게 되는 곳은 아니지만 일단 가면 시원한 프라하의 건축물들과 다리들을 볼 수 있다. 어디 가서 봐도 예쁜 도시라 특별히 어떤 장소를 정해서 가야되는 것은 분명히 아닌 프라하. 그리고 일단 프라하를 가면 프라하 성에 가게 되기 때문에 일석이조.
Berlin, Germany: Berliner Dom
There are various ways to “get high” in Berlin, and one of them is the Berliner Dom. It’s quite a maze to find your way up, and it’s not the most popular point to see the city, but it’s still a great viewpoint. Plus the Berliner Dom is gorgeous. For more, click here.
높은 건물들도 꽤 많아서 선택권이 좀 넓은 베를린. 개인적으로는 베를린 성당 추천. 올라가는 사람들이 많지 않아서 중간에 길을 잃을 가능성이 높지만 일단 올라가면 다른 사람들 때문에 기다릴 필요없이 꽤 오랜 시간 머무르며 사진도 찍고 바깥구경을 할 수 있다. 베를린 성당안에 들어가려면 표를 사야하기 때문에 일단 들어가면 올라갈 것을 추천!
Capri, Italy: Various locations
Capri may be one of the most beautiful places in Italy and since it’s an island, it’s very easy to get high up and look down to the sea. It’s a bit overwhelming to see how blue the sea and sky is, all the yachts and boats and the overall scenery. I think we stayed at one of the top areas for about 20 minutes, just taking photos and looking over the view.
카프리섬은 산토리니만큼 어딜가도 멋진 바다와 풍경을 즐길 수 있는 곳. 이렇게 아름다울수가 있구나 기막혀하다가 시간을 보면 20분 정도가 훌쩍 지나갈 정도. 딱 어느 한 곳이 유명하다기보다는 중간 중간 걷다보면 눈에 띄는 곳을 발견하게 된다. 중요한 점은 택시나 버스를 타면 안되고 꼭 걸어봐야한다는 것. 걷다보면 너무 덥고 힘들어서 포기하고 싶을때도 있을 수 있지만 중간 중간 그늘진 곳에서 바깥구경을 하다보면 바로 에너지 업.
