Arizona/Utah: Monument Valley

One heck of a trip, plus a little mini visit to the Hoover Dam. Or not. 

I should have done more research about Monument Valley and the overall valley scenes of Arizona and Utah, but unfortunately, I was very distracted by some work deadlines. I didn’t even know that there was a mobile game called Monument Valley, which looks amazing. Nevertheless, thanks to some friends’ recommendations, we made it to Monument Valley and because we were staying closer to the Grand Canyon, it was the only thing on our list for that day. The journey started with the drive, as always, and it was less painful and boring than any other drive we had. The roads! The scenery! The rocks! The hills! Maybe except the one in Scotland.

가기전에 미리 준비와 리서치를 했어야했지만 일과 데드라인에 치여서 제대로 못했던 모뉴먼트 밸리. 그랜드캐년보다도 멋진 풍경을 볼 수 있다는 것 말고는 아는게 없었다. 얼마나 조사를 안했는지 우리가 머물고 있는 호텔에서도 너무 멀어서 하루에 모뉴먼트 밸리만 보고 다시 돌아오는 다소 허무한 상황을 겪을 수 밖에. 대신 가는 길, 오는 길 창밖은 물론, 모뉴먼트 밸리도 모두 감동적이었다는 사실.

Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau, mostly famous for its sandstone buttes, or isolated hills with vertical sides and normally a flat top. It’s located on the Arizona and Utah state line and is breathtaking. The way to the valley is, as mentioned, interesting but once you get there, you do feel a bit overwhelmed. Personally, I believe it’s a bit more than Grand Canyon: it’s easier to access since you can take your car and travel around the buttes, the colors are a bit more prominent and the contrast is more dramatic and it’s not so crowded because everyone is traveling in their own pace; whether its by car, horseback or hiking.

You can pay a fee before entering the valley and stop by the visitor’s center, which had the best view, in my opinion. So if you’re visiting and wondering about the best view, stop by the visitor’s center.

모뉴먼트 밸리는 나바호 국립 인디언 공원에 속하는 지역으로 애리조나주와 유타주의 경계에 위치하고 있어서 두개의 주를 모두 경험할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 개인적으로 그랜드캐년보다 훨씬 멋지고 광대하고 감동적. 약 5,000만년 전에는 고원이었으나 시간이 흐르면서 고원의 표면은 바람과 물에 의해 깍이고 깍이면서 지금처럼 산과 뷰트라고 불리는 바위산만 남았다. 뷰트들이 마치 기념비적인 느낌을 준다고 해서 모뉴먼트 밸리라는 이름이 지어졌다고. 깊은 계곡과 산간 지대로 이루어져 있지만 그랜드캐년보다는 훨씬 쉽게 구경할 수 있다. 그랜드캐년은 버스를 타고 구경하거나 직접 하이킹을 해서 내려가야하지만 모뉴먼트 밸리는 안으로 차를 타고 투어를 하거나 말을 타거나 하이킹을 할 수 있어 훨씬 가까운 거리에서 직접 돌들, 사막 지대, 바위산들을 볼 수 있다. 특히 서부영화의 중심지. 존 웨인이 가장 좋아했다는 장소도 있고 기념품샵 한 쪽에는 존 웨인과 관련된 기념품만 파는 코너도 있다. 내가 봤던 영화중에서 모뉴먼트 밸리가 등장했던 영화는 대략, “백투더퓨처 3,” “포레스트 검프,” “인디아나 존스” 정도.

The weather wasn’t the greatest, as you can clearly see from the photo above. There were mini sand storms with rain, but luckily, it didn’t stick too long. And being right in the middle of a desert, we didn’t mind getting some rain now and then. And if you’re traveling with your car into the valley, the sand transforms your car into this little sandy, red-colored mess, so a bit of rain can help wash it all out. For a few seconds, anyway.

다행인지 불행인지 날씨가 오락가락. 사진에서 볼 수 있듯이 갑자기 한 부분에만 비가 오다가 해가 나다가 모래 바람이 불다가 다시 비가 내리다가하는 험상궂은 날씨. 차를 타고 다니다보면 붉은 모래 때문에 차가 온통 빨갛게 변하곤 하는데 이때는 비가 감사. 이때를 제외하고는 차에 계속 기다리고만 있어야해서 비가 별로 반갑지 않았다.

The golden path seen in the photos is the 17-mile car trail. It’s bumpy and rough, but if you don’t want to hike or travel horseback, it’s the best way to actually venture into the valley without any special equipment. Once you pay a fee to get into the national park, you’ll receive a map explaining all the do’s and don’ts (for example, don’t run off to unauthorized places, ask the natives if you can take a photo of them, keep yourself hydrated and have some snacks with you at all times, etc) and a trail where you can see some of the most popular and famous buttes. They all have nicknames, which makes it both quirky and easier to find, things like the Three Sisters, the Mittens, the Elephant and the Camel.

위사진에서 볼 수 있는 황금(!)길은 자동차로 직접 운전해서 구경할 수 있는 길이다. 돌들도 많고 워낙 울퉁불퉁해서 운전하기도 어렵고 꽤 스릴넘치지만 꼭 둘러봐야하는 곳. 곳곳에 기념품을 팔고 있는 나바호족들도 만날 수 있고 돈을 대면 사진도 찍을 수 있지만 붉은 모래바람을 뚫고 지나가는 맛이 캬. (사실 오래전부터 아메리칸 인디언인 나바호족의 거주지역이라 주변에 많은 나바호족을 볼 수 있지만 뭔가 어색한 분위기. 뭔가 기념품을 팔러 억지로 나온 사람들마냥 어색한 느낌.) 크고 작은 뷰트들을 쉽게 만날 수 있는데 모양들이 워낙 특이해서 다양한 별명도 지어졌다. 차를 타고 가면서 세 자매, 장갑, 코끼리 등이라고 불리는 뷰트들을 찾아보는 것도 재미.

The Mittens!

장갑이라고 불리는 뷰트. 너무 더워서 밖에 잠깐 사진만 찍으러 가는데도 크게 한숨 한번 쉬고 나갔다 와야하는 상황. 해가 워낙 쨍해서 붉어보이는것도 있지만 모래와 진흙들이 모두 붉은 빛.

It’s a bit hard to understand the sizes of these buttes, so it’s great when you have something to refer to. Like the people walking around the buttes, some trying to climb up which I would not recommend. The buttes are pretty rough and some parts slippery, so if you take a wrong step, you really can get hurt. So although it can be tempting to climb up, try not to. I’ve seen some people figuring it out the hard way.

사진만 계속 찍다보면 뷰트들의 크기들을 가늠하기가 힘든데 그래서 사람과 함께 찍어봤다. 대단한 크기를 한눈에 쉽게 확인할 수 있었다. 올라가지말라는 경고도 있고 그리고 상식적으로도 올라가면 안될것 같은 강한 느낌이 드는데도 불구하고 어딜가나 말 안듣는 관광객들은 있기 마련. 다행히 자기들도 무서웠는지 조금 올라가고는 다시 금방 내려왔다는.

After the trail, we headed back to our hotel and decided to head out to the Hoover Dam the following day. We had a early start and drove through the desert, and then we heard this loud thumping sound from the back. I first thought it was a helicopter but after a few seconds, realized there was something wrong with the car. Flat tire. Luckily, the rental car came with a 24-hour assistance service, which was a lifesaver and we had to wait about an hour for a tow truck to save us from the sizzling heat and quite thirsty and tired state. So, obviously, we didn’t make it to the Hoover Dam, but the driver pointed out the dam for us, which I took photos of, so technically, we did end up seeing it. A little bit of it.

여기서부터 흥미로워지는데. 모뉴먼트 밸리를 떠나 호텔로 다음날 후버댐을 가기로 결정, 일찍 잠에 들고 아침 일찍 일어나 출발. 후버댐까지 약 40-50분 정도 남겨놓고 고속도로를 달리는데 어디서 이상한 소리가 들리기 시작. 처음에는 헬리콥터 소리인줄 알고 하늘을 올려다보는데 G가 갑자기 옆선으로 옮기더니 차를 세웠다. 여기서부터 난 약간 패닉하기 시작하는데 알고보니 타이어가 폭발. 너무 더웠던 모양. “괜찮아, 타이어 바꾸면 돼,” 라며 당당하게 트렁크로 간 G, 당황해하며 다시 들어오면서 하는 말. “타이어가…타이어가 없어.” 언제부터 미국 렌탈카에 타이어가 없다는 사실을 그때서야 깨닫고 결국 렌탈카에 전화해 견인차를 부르고 사막 고속도로 한가운데에서 1시간 정도 기다렸다는 아름다운 이야기.

견인차에서 바라본 풍경. 차가 너무 커서 시끄럽고 불편했지만 구경할만했다는 것. 후버댐에 가는 중이었는데 결국 못가서 아쉽다고 이야기하자 아저씨의 제안: “후버댐을 볼 수 있는 다리를 건너야되는데 내가 다리를 건너기 바로 전에 트럭에 “문제”가 생겨서 잠시 세울테니 카메라를 들고 재빨리 뛰어가서 후버댐을 보고 와!” 처음에는 장난인줄 알았는데 25년 경력의 견인차 아저씨, 정말로 트럭을 다리 앞에서 세우더니 “아이고, 차가 왜이러나, 뭔가 문제가 생긴 모양이네,” 그러는 와중에 우리는 바로 뛰어가 사진을 찍어왔다. 자동차들이 쌩쌩 달리는 다리 위에서 사진을 찍자니 손이 덜덜 떨려서 뭐로 어떻게 찍었는지도 기억이 안남. 하지만 재밌는 추억이 되어버린 견인차 사건.
