For your eyes, soul and mind, regardless of the season. Including mine.
Cancun seems so far away in the past, but I can say I have more than enough photos to remind me of the warm (or sometimes deadly hot) sun, blue waves and the light breeze. There are so many activities you can do in Cancun, obviously, but one thing we didn’t realize was how they can add up. If you wish, you can of course simply stay in the hotel and enjoy the beaches, pools and cocktails (I miss those glorious Piña coladas… sigh) but it’s obvious most travelers book some type of activity package, such as snorkeling, touring around cultural and historical sites and sailing. Or all three or more.
We had a date set for visiting the famous historical sites, so one day we went out for some snorkeling, sailing and stopping by some islands for lunch and a swim. (Type “Cancun, sailing tours” on Google and you can find a lot of packages. From our experience, the sailing tour companies all seemed friendly, in fact, everyone was super friendly, and it really depends on what you are looking for and where you are staying. There may be a certain travel agency that works with the hotel you’re staying at and I’m pretty sure the first thing you do after checking in is to have a long discussion with them, even before you walk into your room.)
Obviously, there are a lot of different agencies and companies that offer such tours, and deciding on one really depends on you: the price, the duration, the type of boat (casual, fancy, indoors, with/without wifi, which activities you prefer), lunch selections and which island you want to stop by. We chose a basic yacht that included a buffet lunch, snorkeling and a short stop by Isla Mujeres. It took almost the entire day, if you consider how tired we were when we got back to the resort.
And yes, we chose the yacht with alcohol drinks.
Isla Mujeres literally means the “Island of the Women” in Spanish and is about 13 kilometers from the Yucatan Peninsula coast. Back in the day, the island was sacred to the Maya goddess of childbirth and medicine and because the Spanish found so many images of goddesses around the island, that’s what they named it after. It’s currently a touristic, beautiful vacation destination, along with Cancun. Although Cancun does seem a bit more commercial, but I believe that’s because it’s bigger and there’s more space for more hotels, clubs, bars and shopping malls. The funny thing about Isla Mujeres is that you can move around the city in old golf carts.
The very famous Cancun Underwater Museum is also located quite close to Isla Mujeres, so if you are up for some serious snorkeling and scuba diving, this would be the place to be. I’m personally not very good at even snorkeling, so we skipped that part this time. But even without visiting the museum, the island is very close to many coral reefs and also home to sea turtles, so divers, rejoice.
I’m not very good with heat, and it was deadly hot at Isla Mujeres. And there was one way to wash it all down: fresh coconuts. But to be honest, I’m not a very coconut person but it was fun to see the lady chop off the top with a huge knife. There are so many restaurants and bars around the beaches, it’s a bit ridiculous. But then, you’re left with no choice but to walk in under the shades and order a cold drink, otherwise the sun may just swallow you up. We were given about an hour, an hour and a half to navigate the city, so G and I walked around the beaches, took photos, had some coconut and then headed back to the marina to catch the yacht.
Stopping for lunch.
My, or our, kind of heaven.
