Summer, blue skies, beer and jazz. 
Summer in Stuttgart is pretty busy. After the long, dreary and depressing winter, it’s finally time to head out and just soak up all the sun (still pack that umbrella just in case). And it gets easier with summer festivals lined up week after week. Last weekend, I was lucky to be invited to the Openjazz Stuttgart, which I wrote about for The Korea Times here and have always been wanting to go but never really got the chance. Sunday was the end of two other festivals: the summer culture festival at Marktplatz and the Hamburg Fish market in Karlsplatz, and my way to the jazz event just happened to coincide with both of them.
기나긴 겨울이 지나고 드디어 여름이 오고야 말았다. 겨울이 워낙 어둡고 길어서 해만 비추면 너도나도 나오는 독일이라 여름에는 특히 재밌는 이벤트들이나 축제가 많은 편. 그 중 하나가 재즈오픈 스튜트가르트. 성으로 둘러싸인 공연장에서 열리는 축제라 눈과 귀가 한꺼번에 정화되는 느낌. 가자가자하면서 한번도 못갔는데 이번에 스튜트가르트 관광청에서 프레스로 초대되어 아가와 G를 집에 잠시 남겨두고 다녀왔다.
같은 날짜에 열렸던 여름 문화 축제. 다양한 나라를 대표하는 사람들이 공연도 하고 기념품도 팔고 음식도 간단하게 만들어서 파는 축제. 한국 부스도 있어서 잡채나 만두, 김치 등을 파는데 뭔가 반가움. 다른 얘기지만 김치를 좋아하는 유러피안들이 의외로 많다. G는 매워서 좀 안좋아하는 내가 만나본 독일인들 중 김치를 싫어하는 사람은 보지 못했다. 그냥 듣기 좋은 얘기가 아니라 정말 직접 사거나 찾아서 먹을 정도.

여자 아가가 너무 안쓰럽고 부럽게 쳐다보고 있어서 내가 다 사주고 싶은 심정.
Jamie Cullum was wrapping up the event and I was more than glad. The lineup seems to be get bigger and bigger: Chic Corea, Van Morrison and Santana? Applause. If there was one thing I was a bit more interested in than the actual performance, it was the overall atmosphere. And it was quite a Midsummer night’s dream: beer, sekt, fingerfood, cocktails, crepes and a whole lot of soaking up the sun on the grass. And the great thing about this particular event was in fact this preview, which is not much mentioned on official websites. I believe it’s also becoming a thing in Korea, where it used to be just walking up the concert halls and walking back down after, but now it’s more of a cultural event including drinks, food, grass, even camping and enjoying the overall event, not just the actual performance. Hooray.
대미를 장식한 제이미 컬럼. 매력이 철철. 난 아티스트도 아닌데 공연하는 그의 모습을 보면서 뭔가 너무 게으르게 산것 같은 느낌이 들어서 부끄러웠을 정도. 저렇게 열정적으로 공연하는데 난 뭐지, 하는 느낌. 역시나 공연 하나로 끝나면 축제가 아니지. 막혀있긴 하지만 일단 표를 사고 들어가면 흰 텐트로 둘러싸인 공간에서 맥주도 마시고 샴페인도 마시고 핫도그도 먹고 크레페도 먹고. 물론 공짜는 아니고 싸지도 않지만 표값에 이 분위기 값도 들어있지 않을까 하는 생각. 우리나라에도 이제 좋은 공연들과 축제들이 너무 많던데, 부럽.
I have to admit Korea and many other countries treat journalists quite well. Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of things that go on that make even the most modest journalists a bit smug, and again, I have to admit I was one of them. But then I can say that I’ve never been quite comfortable with special gifts and samples, but I did really appreciate the concert and performance tickets given for reviews. I did have the decency to buy some sweet or salty snacks or goodies for the marketing people, but technically speaking, free anything is free, even if its for an article. Fortunately, nobody had to sacrifice their seats for the press as there was a separate area for us and it was actually a perfect spot to not only watch the show, but also the audience. Just look at all those people!
서울에서 기자생활을 하면서 너무나도 당연시 여겼던 일들이 독일에서는 전혀 통하지 않는다는 사실. 표는 주지만 공연장도 아니고 제일 좋은 프레스석도 아닌 옆에 작은 콘테이너에 의자 몇개가 전부. 우리나라 같았으면 행사 관련 용품이나 음료수 정도는 주었겠지만 여기서는 아무것도 없다는 사실. 물도 없음. 오히려 이게 당연하고 옳은걸수도. 다른건 몰라도 솔직히 콘테이너 관람석은 좀 놀랍긴 했다.

I didn’t finish the entire show because I was itching to get back to the baby, but it was such a great time for a new mom, who’s been mostly cooped up in the apartment for a while. The tickets are not cheap, I have to say, but I strongly believe it’s worth it if you like music, jazz in particular, and even if you don’t like music (but then why wouldn’t you?) it’s a great event to spend some quality time with friends or family by listening to music, add in a few beers here and there and worship the sun. Hanging around Schlossplatz is great, but why not make it a bit more special?
집에서 아가와 G가 기다리고 있는 관계로 두시간정도 관람하고 다시 돌아가긴 했지만 뭔가 속시원한 느낌. 이렇게 라이브 공연이 좋았지 하는 생각과 다시 공연장을 열심히 찾아다니자하는 결심까지. 매년 있는 행사니 기회가 된다면 추천 고고.
