And the street that “was” happening. I hope it still is. 
I browsed my photos I took in Florence, which led me to write a short blog post about it, and the same thing happened with Venice. Yikes. I already wrote about the architecture and St. Mark’s Square, which was a bit easier because it was actually about something, and I had apparently left this one out for, well, a bit more research. And so here we are, after about a year.
As much as we plan our trips, we don’t really tend to plan our itinerary that much. We mostly focus on the plane tickets, basic cities, museums and then leave it there before actually leaving. But when we do, it’s most G using his cell phone and sending texts to his friends in Italy for quick suggestions, and me working with my often short list of recommendations from fellow travel blogs and news articles.

다른 곳은 몰라도 이탈리아를 여행할때 이용하게 되는 여행 팁 경로는 다름아닌 G의 친구들. 수많은 유러피안들이 그렇듯이 이탈리아들도 여행을 꽤 많이 하는데 음식 때문인지 특히 다른 나라보다는 이탈리아내의 도시들을 추구하는 경우가 많다. 재밌는건 직접 가서 먹어보고 경험해보지 않았어도 어느 도시에서는 뭘 먹어야하고 뭘 마셔야하는지 정확히 아는 경우가 대부분이라는 것. 대화 중 80%가 음식이나 와인. 지독한 사람들.
G likes to use TripAdvisor, mostly because of the convenience and they also have city guides where you can get some info. I found that Yelp is much more popular in the U.S. but in Europe, TripAdvisor is more commonly used. I like to type in the destination everywhere, on blogs, websites, google and I’ll click anything that pops out. And of course, the city’s own official travel website. I don’t tend to rely on time-to-time articles because I find that it’s quite impossible to really follow through, but for ideas, great. For Venice, I got some info from here and here.
If you have a particular artist, historian, chef or anyone that you are interested, you can also find information on travel destinations based on those people. In my case, I got some ideas from here and while she doesn’t mention Venice, love Courtney Adamo’s insights on various cities. (You need to check dates because the info can be outdated. Always check the most recent articles first and then on with the more general info.) Being a huge fan of instagram, I also like to use instagram these days by typing in a place or city as a hashtag and voila.
우리가 자주 이용하는 여행 관련 사이트트 TripAdvisor. 유럽은 대체적으로 TripAdvisor를 많이 이용하는 반면 미국은 확실히 Yelp을 자주 사용하는 편. 그래서 그만큼 미국 정보는 Yelp에, 유럽 정보는 TripAdvisor에서 더 많이 찾을 수 있다. 블로그나 다양한 매체, 그리고 지금은 인스트라그램도 자주 이용. 뉴스 매체의 기사들은 정확할 수 있는 대신에 즉각적인 정보가 아니라서 그때 그때 필요한 정보를 구하고 싶을때는 소셜미디어가 효과적인 느낌.
다른 좋은 방법은 좋아하는 역사학자나 요리사, 작가, 예술가, 블로거 등을 중심으로 도시를 공부하는 방법. 예를 들면 파리의 경우에는 David Lebovitz의 블로그를, 피렌체의 경우에는 블로거 Courtney Adamo의 블로그를 참고했다.
I’m a bit afraid of dolls, especially masks that have two slits for the eyes, mostly white and heavily decorated. But I have to admit, they are very pretty, but I didn’t buy one out of, well, fear. Plus, I don’t buy souvenirs much, mostly postcards which are sent to friends and family. Like everyone says, invest in experiences not things, right?
인형, 특히 사람의 모양을 본뜬 인형은 무서워하는 내가 이런 가면들에 감동할리가. 언제부턴가 기념품을 사지 않기 시작. 엄마는 예전에는 티스푼을, 이제는 종을 모으시는데 내가 거기에 약간 보탬이 되긴 하지만 개인적으로는 가족이나 친구들한테 보낼 엽서 정도만 사는 편. 다른 기념품은 약간 돈이 아깝기도 하고 들고 다니기도 겁나고 집에 딱히 놓을 곳도 없고… 엽서 고고.
If you ever wondered what and how Venice looked like a few decades ago, head to the Gallerie dell’Accademia where you can find so many paintings with gondolas and gondoliers in very, very cool costumes. The overall museum is packed with beautiful paintings and portraits and it’s the home of the oh so famous Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci. Because the artwork is on paper and thus very delicate it’s not available for the public at all times.
Gallerie dell’Accademia는 베니스에 있는 수많은 미술관 중 하나. 사실 유럽의 미술관들이 대부분 화려하지만 이탈리아 작품들의 화려함이란! 다른 미술관들보다도 여기에 가고 싶었던 이유는 다빈치의 비트루비우스적 인간을 보고 싶었기 때문. 종이 작품들이 늘 그렇듯 특정한 날에만 공개를 하는데 두둥, 우리가 간 날 공개를 해주시었다.
Our hotel was very close to Cannaregio district, which is a bit remote, full of bars, cafes and trattorias and charm. It’s more north from the city center and thus making it more of a hideout from the busy streets of vendors and travelers. I would recommend any where around this district, but trust me, you’ll be able to find a place you like: from loud, buffet-styles (we could not help but to walk in and check what was going on. It was just a Friday night.) to the more romantic, quieter places (we bumped into Katie Leung who played Cho Chang in the Harry Potter series at one of the trattorias. Very pretty, but a little too conscious of her surroundings. I glanced at her once and she was ready to leave the restaurant. I won’t take your photo, don’t worry. Sheesh.)
우리가 머물고 있었던 호텔은 카나레지오 구역에 있었는데 사실 베네치아의 중심가와는 조금 먼 거리. 중심지에서 숙소까지 좀 걸어야했지만 복잡스러운 관광지의 분위기에서 벗어날 수 있어서 오히려 좋았다. 이것저것 자료를 찾아보니 부쩍 뜨고 있는 구역이라는데 이쪽에 있는 거의 모든 레스토랑들을 추천해줄 수 있을 정도. 로맨틱한 레스토랑부터 부페, 좀 더 자유로운 분위기의 바와 펍까지 완벽하게 갖춘 구역. 사람도 너무 많지 않고 장사꾼도 거의 없어서 정말 자연스럽게 즐길 수 있었다.
After dinner, pick up a beer or glasses of wine, nibble on some simple snacks you can buy from local supermarkets and sit by the canal. There will be mosquitos during the summer, but it really can’t bother you when you are drinking wine here. (It did bother me a bit, but I got used to it after my 12th mosquito bite.)
저녁 후 간단하게 맥주나 와인 한잔 사서 수로 근처에 앉아서 시간을 보내는 것도 좋은 방법. 너무 여름이면 모기들의 공격을 받을 수 있지만 사실 이런 상황, 분위기, 경치에 모기가 무슨 상관! 분위기에 취한다는 것이 진짜 가능하구나라고 느꼈던 순간.
If you are traveling during the summer, buy a small spray of mosquito repellant from the supermarket. Canal, water bugs and mosquitos. Use them for yourself and also if you have kids, spray on.- Stop by the more remote, hidden places. There’s so much to do in Venice, but take a turn and visit the Cannaregio district or even the Jewish Quarters.
- It’s perfectly fine to check the menu written around the restaurants. Research continues on the street.
