Preferably in that order.
One of the sad things about writing articles on travel is that sometimes, more often than not, you don’t really get to visit the places you write about. Articles like the best beaches in the world, the best cocktail bars in the world or the best libraries in the world read well, but the writer usually don’t get to visit all of them before writing it. Obviously. This was the case when I was writing about most beautiful libraries in the world for CNN Travel and looking back, I could have added a bit more variety. But this happens when you have a deadline and a budget. Reality.
Still, I’m proud to say I now actually live very close to one of them (the amazing Stuttgart library) and had the chance to finally visit one of my favorite ones: the Trinity College Library in Dublin. It’s beautiful. It really does take your breath away, even before you know what it actually contains. It’s the home of the Long Room and the Book of Kells.
기사, 특히 여행 기사를 쓰다보면 가보지도 않았는데 가본것처럼 기사를 써야할때가 많…아니 대부분이다. CNN Travel에서 특히나 좋아하는 순위 기사들의 경우, 예를 들어 세계에서 가장 아름다운 해변들 혹은 세계에서 가장 아름다운 도서관 등이 그런 경우인데 어쩔 수 없는 현실. 하지만 적어도 세계에서 가장 아름다운 도서관 중에서 두 곳은 다녀왔다. 하나는 우리 바로 옆집인 스튜트가르트 도서관, 다른 하나는 더블린에 위치한 트리니티 칼리지내에 위치한 도서관.
Th Long Room is stunning. It’s unreal to actually be standing there, but then you get pushed and shoved by other people and then you realize, yup, you’re there and so are a lot of other people. There is this thing about old libraries that just change you; all those books that have been written, read and stored there for decades and being present at that moment. Something similar to the feeling I get whenever I visit the Vatican: scared, in awe, in disbelief, overwhelmed and grateful.
들어서면 말도 안되게 아름답다. 해리포터에 나왔다고 해서 찾아봤는데 공식적인 기록이 없어서 정확하진 않지만 일단 마법사들이 공부할법한 그런 곳임은 확실. 종교가 없는데도 불구하고 바티칸에 가면 뭔가에 홀린 것 같은 느낌이 들거나 할때가 있는데 여기에 들어서도 비슷한 감정. 이런 곳에서 책을 뽑아 몇백년된 테이블에 앉아서 공부하는 느낌은 어땠을까 하는 등의 상상을 하다가 옆사람 카메라나 가방에 치여서 “아, 죄송.” 마냥 상상만하고 있을 수는 없는, 그만큼 관광객이 많은 곳이다. 그래도 한번쯤은 꼭 들러야하는 곳으로 추천합니다.
Taking a baby inside the library, well, anywhere for that matter, can be a bit tricky. But the guards and security team are very helpful, guiding us to the nearest elevator and helping us out with the stroller. That said, if you’re child is younger than say, 4 years old, there won’t be much for them to do in there. A did pretty well considering, but I’m sure she didn’t enjoy it as much as I did.
The Book of Kells is a manuscript Gospel book in Latin. What makes it so special is that it’s illuminated, which means the text is supplemented with various decorations like initials, borders and illustrations, and most of the work are done in gold and silver, making it literally “illuminating.” The contents of the book are the four Gospels of the Christian scriptures. It seems it wasn’t really finished because there are some pages that appear to have only outlines and of course, being old, fragile and important as it is, several pages and leaves have been lost. The Book of Kells is not in the Long Room but withing the Trinity College Library where you can visit before walking into the Long Room.
이 도서관에 보관되어 있는 켈스의 서는 1,300년 전쯤 만들어진 예수의 생애와 교훈을 기록한 복음서. “쓰여진”이 아니라 “만들어진”이라고 한 이유는 바로 각 페이지마다 등장하는 화려한 장식들 때문. 너무 아름다워서 이걸 어찌 봤지 할 정도. 손으로 만지면 안될것 같은 느낌.
도서관 자체도 너무 아름다워서 다들 넋을 놓고 구경하고 있다. 이렇게 많은 책들과 이 모든 책의 역사가 고스란히 남아있는 도서관이라니. 스튜트가르트 도서관의 매력이 겁날 정도로 깨끗하고 OCD적인 분위기라면 여긴 역사 그 자체가 매력. 책들과 인테리어에 압도.
Not the best transition in terms of this post content, but we’re doing it. From the Book of Kells to the home of Guinness.
I don’t personally like dark beer, with the exception of Guinness. So visiting the Guinness factory was a must for us, not because we just like the beer, which we do, but I was curious to learn more about the history on what it took to make such a revolutionizing beer. And it did take a very special and smart man to do just that.
기네스 맥주 공장. 개인적으로 흑맥주는 별로 좋아하지 않는데 기네스는! 기름기가 많은 음식과 먹기 좋은 맥주라고 생각하는데 그래서 그런가, 영국이나 스코틀랜드에 워낙 기름기가 많은 음식이 대부분. 햄버거, 치킨, 어른아이 다 즐겨 먹는 온국민의 간식, 후렌치후라이.
공장 투어는 생각보다 길지 않았다. 한 20 명정도가 그룹으로 다니는데 기네스의 역사, 기네스를 만든 아서 기네스라는 천재의 인생, 그리고 어떻게 따라 먹어야 가장 맛있는지 등의 정보를 알려주는 정도.
Arthur Guinness started brewing ales in 1759 and he signed a 9,000 year lease at 45 pounds per annum for a unused brewery in Dublin. Smart. The tour is wonderful, perhaps a bit shorter than I expected, but you get to drink a wee bit of it while the guide explains everything from top to bottom, from the color to the way you are supposed to pour it (because, yes, there is a special way).
Ever since I started drinking Guinness, I did have the feeling that the brand itself does a really good job distinguishing themselves as something different. Better, most of the time, so a bit of self mythologizing, if you will, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so. This stunning wood sculpture was created by over 20 carvers and artists from around the world and it is in fact a giant pint of Guinness. They even made a video about it.
사실 굳이 투어를 하지 않아도 워낙 공장 자체가 정보도 많고 정리를 잘해놔서 어느정도의 역사는 숙지할 수 있다. 하지만 여기까지 왔으니 투어 고고. 독일에서는 맥주 광고를 그렇게 화려하거나 거창하게 하지 않는 분위기인데, 미국이나 영국령의 나라들은 맥주 광고에 굉장히 많은 시간과 노력을 쏟는 느낌이다. 아니나 다를까 공장 투어중 발견한 기네스 파인트 한잔을 본떠 만든 작품이 있는데 전세계 20여명의 조각가들이 함께 만든 것이라고.
The tour ends at the Gravity Bar, where you can drink a pint and enjoy the view. To be very honest, I really don’t think the bar is that worth it, especially if you have a child and stroller. It’s super packed, there aren’t room to actually sit down and enjoy your pint. My suggestion would be just go straight down the restaurant area where you can not only drink the same pint of Guinness but with much comfortable seats and even some nice food. Seriously, the food was impressive.
투어가 끝나갈때쯤 마지막으로 공장의 맨 꼭대기층에 위치하고 있는 Gravity Bar에 도착하게 되는데 개인적으로 이곳은 비추. 전망이 좋긴하지만 자리도 너무 좁고 않을 곳도 많지 않고 기네스 한잔 마시려고 이런 애씀이라니. 특히 아이가 있는 경우라면 모두에게 민폐. 차라리 1층에 가서 식당에서 즐기는게 나아요. 아, 식당도 왠만한 레스토랑만큼 메뉴도 다양하고 음식도 괜찮아요.
아, 그리고 1층에 굉장히 큰 기념품샵이 있는데 욕심났던 물건들은 티셔츠, 기네스가 들어있다는 다양한 스낵들, 그리고 역시나 기네스 맥주.

- Book your ticket online before you go for the tour. There are also different time slots so you can really pick the right time. This is always such a good idea, but in this case, you really won’t have to wait at all. And considering the weather in Dublin being famously unpredictable, do it.
